Argon Audio TT-3 + Fenris A4 + Kontur 10 – The First Vinyl System, Done Right

A belt-drive turntable with a real Ortofon cartridge, a pair of compact active speakers with a phono input, and the desktop stands that angle them at your ears. This is the starter set we put together for a desk, a bedroom or a first flat: three Scandinavian-designed pieces, nothing to configure, and Bluetooth and TV ARC on the speakers for everything that is not vinyl.

The TT-3 has no phono stage of its own, so it is matched here to a speaker that does. The Fenris A4 carries an MM phono input, HDMI ARC and Bluetooth behind its own amplifiers, and the Kontur 10 stands raise the pair off the desk and damp what the furniture would otherwise pass on. It is a complete first vinyl system for a desk, a study or a small living room.

The turntable

Argon Audio TT-3

A straightforward belt-drive deck: MDF plinth, 560 g aluminium platter, aluminium arm with an Ortofon OM5E already mounted. There is no RIAA stage inside, which is why it is paired with speakers that have one. Operation is fully manual and the dust cover is in the box.

Argon Audio Fenris A4

Compact actives with four amplifier channels inside and a connector for everything a small room needs. The MM phono input is the reason this set works without a separate preamp, and HDMI ARC lets the television share the same pair. Bluetooth 5.0 covers phones, with SBC as the codec.

The stands

Essentials Kontur 10

Desktop stands, 9 cm high, in black powder-coated steel with a vibration-damping foam pad on the top plate. They lift the Fenris A4 clear of the desk and give the cables a route, so the speaker stops using the furniture as a sounding board. Argon lists them as a match for the Fenris and Forte ranges.

Setting it up

  1. Unpack the TT-3, fit the platter and belt as the manual shows, and stand it on a level surface away from the speakers.
  2. Run the RCA cable from the TT-3 into the Fenris A4 phono (MM) input and attach the ground wire.
  3. Join the two speakers with the supplied 3 m cable and give the active one mains power.
  4. Set a Kontur 10 under each speaker, on the foam pad, and route the cables through the stand.
  5. Choose the phono input on the remote, set the volume low and lower the stylus by hand.

Questions

Do I need a phono preamp?

Not with these speakers. The TT-3 has no RIAA stage of its own, and the Fenris A4 has a phono (MM) input, so the turntable connects straight to it.

Could I use the TT-3 with a different amplifier later?

Yes, as long as that amplifier has a phono input or you add an external MM phono stage. A line input alone will sound very quiet and thin.

Are the Kontur 10 floor stands?

No. They are desktop stands, 9 cm high, meant for a desk, sideboard or shelf rather than the floor.

Will the stands take the weight?

Yes. Each Kontur 10 is rated to 15 kg and a Fenris A4 weighs 5.5 kg.

Does the Bluetooth support aptX?

No. The Fenris A4 uses Bluetooth 5.0 with SBC, up to 24-bit/48 kHz. For higher-resolution wireless, the Forte range adds aptX HD.

Can the television use the same speakers?

Yes. HDMI ARC connects the TV with one cable and hands volume control to the TV remote.

What size room does this suit?

Small to medium rooms and desks. The Fenris A4 reaches 52 Hz, plus or minus 6 dB, and the pre-out is there if you later add a subwoofer.

Is a cartridge included?

Yes. An Ortofon OM5E moving-magnet cartridge is fitted at the factory, so the deck is ready to play.
